This picture book is written and illustrated by Cozbi A. Cabrera depicts the story of a young Black girl who gets bullied by her classmates due to her hair being different. Throughout this book she is taught by her neighbor why caring for her natural hair is worthwhile.
6. Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning book, written by Malala Yousafzai and illustrated by Kerascoet, tells Malala’s own story, inspiring the youth to push for change without seeking permission.
7. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
A novel about a sixteen-year-old girl who moves between two worlds: a poor neighborhood where she resides and the wealthy suburban prep school she attends. In this novel she witnesses her childhood best friend get murdered by a white police officer, a reality that’s all too real.
8. Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness, Anastasia Higginbotham
This book aims to help white families teach their children about privilege, racism, and white supremacy to understand what it means to actively be anti-racist.
9. Let’s Talk About Race by Julius Lester
This picture book written by Julius Lester and illustrated by Karen Barbour helps point out to each child that their race is unique and special by introducing race as just one of the many chapters in a person’s story.
