With summer here in full force, making sure your skin is protected from the sun’s harmful rays can feel like a full-time job. Remaining diligent about reapplying sunscreen every two hours is so important for keeping your skin youthful, hydrated, and healthy. You may feel every two hours is excessive however, a lack of protection can cause some severe irreversible skin damage (dark spots, premature aging, uneven skin tone and worse, skin cancer). Though we know all of this, the majority of us are under-applying, or completely skipping SPF on other vulnerable parts of our bodies that see the most exposure besides the face. Below you’ll find the five most vulnerable spots (not including facial) you may have been neglecting but need to be incorporating to your daily year-round sun-care routine. It’s important to note that your face, scalp, neck/ears, chest, back, lips, and the back of hands are the most prone to sun-damage because it’s exposed to sun rays all year long. Please refer here to see a list of curated sunscreens for you and your family here.

Scalp:
Your hair serves as a protective layer to the scalp but it’s often overlooked when it comes to sun protection. It’s important to note that because the scalp is the highest point on the body, it’s easy to burn. Also, skin cancer of the scalp makes up for 13% of skin cancer patients. The skin on your scalp (along with the backs of your hands) is thinner and less resilient, therefore are prone to more long-term sun damage. Be sure to apply and reapply sunscreen every two hours as sweat will wear down the application. Try SPF powders like Color Science’s Brush-On Shield SPF 50 or Coola’s Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30 for all day scalp protection.

Neck/ Ears/ Back:
Your daily skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your jawline and the same goes for sunscreen. Because the skin on the neck is thin it’s more prone to wrinkles and signs of aging due to the lack of oil glands in the neck. When you’re applying your sunscreen be sure to cover your neck, back of neck, ears, and back.

Chest:
To prevent fine lines, pigment irregularities, and skin cancer it’s crucial you don’t gloss over your chest when it comes to sunscreen. Just like your scalp, neck, and back of hands, the skin on your chest is thin making it more prone to the sun’s rays. This doesn’t just extend to summer, UV rays penetrate through clouds so it’s important to apply and reapply rain or shine.

Lips:
Lip related cancer is most commonly due to excessive sun exposure or tobacco use. Luckily for us, there are a ton of lip balms (including glosses and lipsticks) that include SPF, like Supergoop!’s Lipscreen with SPF 40. To avoid getting sun damage on your lips make sure you’re applying SPF to them and avoiding licking your lips. Avoid going outside between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm when the sun rays are the strongest.

Back of Hands:
The backs of our hands are one of the most common and overlooked spots even though they receive a lot of sun exposure. Just like the scalp, the skin on the back of your hands is thin, meaning there’s less protection.

Coolibar with UPF 50Supergoop!’s Handscreen with SPF
