6 Tips for Upping Your Walking Game, According to Harvard Health

Walking has quickly become a favorite quarantine activity for many. However, there’s more to walking than simply putting one foot in front of the other. Harvard Health has highlighted some small yet important techniques to ensure you’re receiving all of the benefits from this exercise. It may seem silly giving tips on something that we do every single day but perfecting your walking form will help your muscles and potentially alleviate aches and pains. Below you will find 6 tips from Harvard Health on how to improve your walking technique.

1.Stand Tall
One of the most overlooked techniques for walking is standing tall. As Harvard Health mentioned, many people bring their hunched over computer posture with them on their walks. Did you know that doing this can make it harder to breathe and can lead to back pain? To avoid this, elongate your spine as if you had a string on the top of your head and were pulled vertically. Harvard Health also added that you should position your thumbs on your lower ribs and fingertips on your hips for a form check. “As you stand up tall, notice how the distance in between increases. Try to maintain this elongation as you walk.”

2. Eyes Up
Tech-neck is a real thing and while the majority of us bring our devices on our walks, try to refrain from looking at it while walking. When you’re looking down at your feet you’re unnecessarily putting stress on your upper back and neck. Instead, it’s important to bring your eyes 10-20 feet in front of you. By doing so, you’ll still be able to see any objects ahead while preventing upper-body tension.

3. Keep Your Shoulders Back and Down
Just like with any exercise practice, you want to avoid scrunching up your shoulders, and the same goes for walking. “Roll your shoulders up, back, and then down. This is where your shoulders should be as you walk- not pulled up toward your ears,” explains Harvard Health.

4. Swing From Your Shoulders
As we’ve learned, it’s easy to hold tension and stress in your shoulders when walking, but did you know that stress and tension can make its way down to your arms? To avoid this, Harvard Health suggests “swinging your arms forward and back, like a pendulum.” Avoid bringing them across your body or letting them go higher than your chest.

5. Keep A Neutral Pelvis
If you practice Pilates this will come naturally to you, but for those who don’t, be sure that the position of your pelvis is neutral and your core is actively being engaged. The goal is to not have your tailbone tucked under, your stomach sticking out, or your back over-arched.

6. Tread Lightly
To lessen the impact on your joints while you walk Harvard Health notes “you should be rolling from heel to toe as you stride, not landing flat-footed with a thud.” It’s also important to note that you should be avoiding taking large steps, and aiming for a “smooth, quiet stride- no bouncing” to avoid your risk of injury.
