Believe it or not, fall is rapidly approaching. And before you take your cashmere sweaters and heavier duvet covers out of storage, don’t forget that your houseplants will require some seasonal modifications as well. Whether you’re new to having indoor plants or want to know how to maintain their optimal health, see these five tips provided by Bloomscape, the ultimate online shop and resource guide on all things plants.

1.Be Care With Watering
One of the biggest mistakes people make as we transition into cooler months is continuing to water plants as much as they would in the warmer months. Indoor plants, generally, don’t need as much water as most people think, especially in the fall and winter. Overwatering brings on a multitude of issues, especially root rot, a disease that attacks the roots of growing plants in damp soil. To determine whether your plant needs water, Bloomscape’s Plant Mom suggests doing a touch test. To do this, push your finger into the soil about one to three inches, and if you feel moisture, omit watering it. If it’s dry, water until it flows from the drainage holes, ensuring there isn’t any excess water in the saucer.

2. If They’ve Been Outside, Bring Them Back In
If you brought any of your indoor plants outside this summer, don’t forget to bring them back inside. Ideally, do this before temperatures get to be 55 degrees Fahrenheit (or 13 degrees Celsius). Upon bringing them in, remove any fallen leaves, debris, or sticks that have accumulated on the surface of the soil. All of which can attract pests and create an environment for mold.

3. Consider The Lighting
Lighting is crucial to any plant. Therefore, you will want to keep an eye on the angle of the sun and how it hits your plants throughout the day. According to Bloomscape, note how the light flows in and position your plants accordingly. Plan on checking this every few months.

4. Invest In A Humidifier
In the warmer months, humidity isn’t something that we have to worry about. However, as the seasons change, the air naturally changes as well. As the seasons inherently change, the air does as well. As we turn our heaters on, the air can get extremely dry, which isn’t the environment your plants will necessarily thrive in. The majority of indoor plants, especially ones that are used to a tropical region, love humidity. You can easily add more humidity to the air by simply investing in a humidifier. If getting a humidifier isn’t an option, grouping plants together in your home can also create a similar microenvironment that will help maintain humidity for the group in that specific area.

5. Give Them A Trim
Lastly, this is a great time to give your indoor plants a little trim. Grab your pruning shears or sharp scissors and carefully inspect for any dead or dying leaves. Look for the leaves that are brown or yellow and cut them at the base, near the stem, or the soil. As for the yellow or brown tips that you may have on your plant, take them off.
