In the wellness community the word “adaptogen” has been thrown around quite a bit. But what are adaptogens exactly? Essentially adaptogens are a specific group of healing plants that have actually been used in medicine for a long time (seen in Tradtional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine). In short, adaptogens help promote homeostasis to help the body adapt to stress and resist fatigue. People have been using adaptogenic herbs for more than 2,500 years and numerous medical research confirms their healing powers. Different herbs can help the body counteract the adverse effects of stress by supporting the adrenal glands and helping cells eliminate toxic by-products. Traditional medicine is making a huge comeback and today, you can easily find powered adaptogens to add into your smoothies, coffee/teas, supplements, and even baked goods at your local grocery stores.

Some common adaptogens are

Rhodiola Rosea– has major beauty boosting benefits and helps aid against stress induced depression. It can also reduce the liver’s natural antioxidant stores, stimulating an appropriate immune response to inflammation. Should be taken in the morning

Ashwagandha– calms the body’s physiological and nervous system. Aids the thyroid, soothes anxiety, and improves sleep.

Cordyceps– is a powerful antioxidant mushroom with anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help control insulin and lower blood sugar levels- two factors important for protecting lean muscle mass and burning fat for energy. Cordyceps naturally fight both physical and mental fatigue by increasing the production of our body’s major energy source, ATP.

Chaga– is an overall great grounding herb. It’s a mushroom that’s perfect for anxiety, stress, and nervousness. It’s great to take with you on a flight, or before a stressful day at work.

Moringa– great for reducing inflammation in your body, regulating your blood sugar levels, and improving digestion. Long term users have noticed increased energy, more restful sleep and a stronger immune system.

He Shou Wu– nourishes your liver and kidneys, can improve feelings of weakness/fatigue, and can help with insomnia. It’s been used to aid in lower back pain and anemia.

Reishi– supports immune response by increasing or decreasing your immune function sensitivity depending on what you need. It also supports your cardiovascular system and soothes your nervous system. It’s known to be one of the most balancing adaptogens.
