A Different Way to Steam

Feb 15, 2018

Need an easy way to practice some self-care? Tea and the steam it provides bring great relaxation alongside helping healthy circulation, hydration and removing impurities. Nowadays it seems like there’s a tea for everything. Anxiety, bloating and allergies can all be moderated with an herbal concoction designed to support your internal systems. With functional beauty (beauty from the inside out) catching on there’s been a surge in “beauty teas”. Though the benefits vary from brand to brand and tea to tea, beauty teas can help repair internal damage- inflammation, hormone imbalance, and gut health- but it can also help skin health as well. In addition to sipping them, they can also be used on your face, either as a steam or mask.
Steam opens up your pores and by using herbs and flowers it nourishes and tones your skin. By adding the plants to hot water it releases their nutrient-rich aromatic oils, which are then absorbed by your skin. Warm steam softens the surface of your skin, removes impurities, bacteria, and dirt from your pores. By increasing your perspiration it helps your skin’s blood vessels to dilate, improving blood flow. The blood feeds and oxygenates the skin. For a healthy complexion, good circulation is key. Steam is also hydrating. The damp heat revives tired skin and supports the absorption of moisture from your skin care products, increasing your skin’s elasticity. Steam allows you to connect with your breath and the aromatherapy is relaxing and soothing to both the body and mind.
To use as a steam, simply steep one or two tea bags (or serving sizes with loose teas) in a bowl of hot water, drape a towel over your head, hover your face over the mixture and let the rising steam carry the herbal properties to your skin for about 5-10 minutes. The same also goes for your bath. You can add bagged or loose-leaf tea (make sure it’s in a cloth so it doesn’t clog your drains) to receive the same healing properties to the rest of your body. Unsure of what teas to look out for? Ingredients like rosehip, dandelion root, hibiscus, green rooibos, and juniper berry work to hydrate the skin from the inside out. Spearmint tea is known to help people who suffer from cystic acne. Nettles are known to help calm inflammation and when used in conjunction as a steam, it can help enhance your circulation, clear your pores, and prime the skin to receive product better.
