Are Heated Workouts Damaging Your Skin?

Do you like heated workouts like hot yoga? Have you ever noticed discoloration or persistent redness in your skin afterwards? There are plenty of workouts that can help boost skin complexions. A hot yoga class every now and then can really do your body some good but going too often can negatively affect your complexion as well.

“We used to think that UV rays were the only external cause of skin damage, like age spots, but a growing body of research tells us that’s just not true,” Doris Day, MD, a clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center told Allure Magazine. “Spin instructors and women who were taking hot yoga upwards of five times a week were getting more discoloration and persistent redness than other patients.”

“We used to think that UV rays were the only external cause of skin damage, like age spots, but a growing body of research tells us that’s just not true. Some forms of heat are proving to be as damaging as UV,” says Day. What’s the reason for this? A Duke University professor of dermatology, Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, explained that it has to do with how heat plays a role with our skin cells. She also explained, “We now know that heat triggers melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells within our skin, to create the pigment that causes age spots as a defense mechanism. Melanocytes react when they’re injured, and heat is a form of injury.”

If you love spin and hot yoga classes don’t fret. There are things you can do to prevent skin damage from the heat. Try switching up your workouts. Instead of doing a heated workout multiple times a week try spacing them out with non-heat heavy workouts. And when you do attend a heated class, take an icy cold shower or use a cooling facial mask directly after your workout to help regulate your skin’s temperature. The sooner this is done after a heated workout the less damage you pose to your skin. And because getting home immediately after a workout isn’t typically realistic, be sure to stick a gel mask or moisturizer in your bag for after.
