For the longest time, inflammation was something that was exclusively associated with reactions to bacteria and viruses. Fast forward to today, thanks to an abundance of science-backed research, we now know the causes of inflammation. Moreover, it’s been made abundantly clear that inflammation is affiliated with diet and lifestyle factors more than anything else.

There’s no question that inflammation is a healthy part of your body’s immune response. However, it can be harmful as well. On one hand, it’s your body’s way of fighting infection and acute injury. But on the other, when your body is constantly in overdrive, it can become a hazard to your health. This process normally turns itself off, but when the immune system fails to regulate and stop the inflammation cycle, it can lead to chronic inflammation, which degrades cells, causing tissue damage and organ breakdown. This explains why chronic inflammation leads to chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Not to mention, chronic inflammation has been shown to be one of the largest contributors to almost every chronic and autoimmune disease.

Some of you might be wondering, what exactly causes inflammation? Regular consumption of ultra-processed foods, added sugars, hydrogenated oils, habitual usage of alcohol, a sedentary lifestyle, poor stress management, and a lack of sleep are all dominant triggers. Chronic inflammation is not to be looked at lightly. It can cause DNA damage and lead to cancer along with evidence-backed symptoms like frequent infections, depression, acid reflux, body pain, and much more. However, there is some good news- chronic inflammation can be massively reduced or even reversed through lifestyle and dietary changes.

Unfortunately, inflammation triggers can be found in a variety of foods that we commonly consume. This is why it’s crucial to become more aware of what inflammatory drinks you typically consume daily. Some of them are obvious, while others aren’t so obvious. Below you will find five common inflammatory beverages to pay closer attention to.

1. Alcohol
While an occasional cocktail can surely help you relax and unwind, drinking too much alcohol periodically can raise inflammation markers in your body. A 2017 study in Alcohol Research: Current Reviews found that excess drinking results in intestinal inflammation by changing the composition and function of the gut microbiome, weakening the intestinal lining and compromising the intestinal mucosal immunity. If you know anything about the gut microbiome, you know that gut bacteria affect the way your immune system functions and influence our risk for type 2 diabetes, obesity, and colon cancer. To add insult to injury, alcohol also interferes with your detox systems, mental clarity, sleep quality, and ultimately leads to chronic inflammation. To make healthier swaps, be sure to avoid sweetened liquors and replace the tonic water with a seltzer. Full disclosure, alcohol is still alcohol, and should never be perceived as a health food even if you’re only drinking wine. Looking to indulge but want something much healthier without the buzz? Try some spirits sans the alcohol and skip the hangover entirely.

2. Soda
By now, we all know that soda is far from a health food. But swapping it for a diet alternative isn’t doing you any favors either. Sodas are highly inflammatory due to the presence of high amounts of added refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and dyes. Diet soda on the other hand isn’t much better due to artificial sweeteners, which can be just as inflammatory. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has linked drinking one soda per day to increased levels of C-RP, an inflammation marker, as well as higher insulin resistance and cholesterol. If you are a die-hard soda drinker, try healthier alternatives like Poppi, Zevia, and Spindrift.

3. Energy Drinks
Often filled with artificial flavors, dyes, and sugar, energy, and sports drinks are something to avoid. A high intake of refined sugar can suppress the immune system and lead to inflammation. Options that contain “no sugar added” usually include aspartame or sucralose, which are both high up on the inflammatory list. Instead, opt for these electrolyte filled foods or coconut water. Be sure to read ingredient labels and look for brands that are 100 percent all-natural and don’t contain any added sugars.

4. Coffee Shop Creations
Most coffee shops, whether local or chain, have drink concoctions that contain upwards of 50 grams of sugar or more. While some of that sugar naturally comes from milk, there are at least multiple teaspoons of sugar in your seemingly innocent latte. Given that we should strive to have no more than six teaspoons of sugar a day, these drinks should not be making a regular occurrence in your day-to-day life. If you’re not making your morning beverage at home, always ask the barista to nix the syrups, added sugars, and opt for unsweetened varieties of milk options.

5. Oat Milk
The highly-popular dairy-free milk alternative has been having its viral moment for the past few years. In theory, it sounds fairly healthy, but many brands are not as nutritious as their marketing may lead you to believe. With highly inflammatory oils such as canola, rapeseed, and sunflower making their way to your refreshments, it’s not something you want to consume regularly. Even if you’re consuming a rather “clean” and unsweetened oat milk, it still contains approximately seven grams of sugar per cup due to the enzymatic breakdown of the oat starch. So you can see how if this is your perpetual milk of choice, it may rev up an inflammatory process and likely make you feel less than great. For other creamy alternatives that won’t spike your blood sugar, switch to unsweetened soy, pea, or hemp milk instead.

Takeaway
Consuming any of these beverages occasionally in moderation is something you shouldn’t stress out about, and it certainly won’t drive chronic inflammation. However, regular consumption over time is what you want to watch out for. By simply forgoing products that contain high amounts of refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial flavors can go a long way in helping combat chronic inflammation and improve your overall health in a manageable way.
