All we ever hear is how important it is to stay physically active and get regular exercise. But whether you are training for an Ironman or trying to maintain a healthy fitness habit, it’s important to remember more isn’t always better. Rest days are just as imperative as movement. Adopting an all-or-nothing mindset can actually be dangerous and hinder your fitness goals.

While you may be enticed to park yourself in front of the couch to watch Netflix, keep in mind you should still be getting in some light movement. Think stretching, walking, or doing a very light yoga session that will help ease you to sleep.

Whatever light activity you choose to do, be sure to stay hydrated , eat nourishing foods, and focus on decompressing . Remember, resting is not lazy, and it’s those regular breaks that allow our bodies to recover and repair. It’s a large part of progress, regardless of how intensely you may be used to training. Skipping rest days can lead to overtraining and overall burnout, which could then lead to injury. Active rest days are vital for meeting your goals and staying safe and healthy overall. Below you will find six reasons why rest days are essential.

1. Allows Time For Recovery
Downtime from your workout should never be viewed as lazy or a waste of time. We have to shake the whole mentality of “no rest days” or working out twice in one day. Whether you lift weights, run, or do pilates, you create microscopic tears in your muscle tissue. It’s these tears that cause your muscles to ache after a training period. When we allow our bodies to rest, cells called fibroblasts are able to repair them. Which then helps tissue heal and grow, resulting in stronger muscles. This overtime is what allows you to perform intense workouts with little to no effort.

2. Supports Mental Health
Have you ever woken up and felt utterly exhausted, yet ridden with guilt at the thought of skipping a workout? We have all been there. When this occurs, it’s important to tap in and listen to your body. Psychologically speaking, resting allows your mind to recharge, which significantly helps with burnout and motivation. Exercising increases endorphins, energy levels, and can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. But when we’re not allowing our bodies to rest, working out is no longer an enjoyable experience. If your workouts start to feel more of a burden than something that was once enjoyable, it’s a sign you aren’t resting enough. After a day or two, you may even notice that your motivation for getting back into your fitness routine heightens.

3. Injury Reduction
One of the top ways you can prevent injuries is by resting. I know it sounds counterintuitive but hear me out. Consistent breaks are crucial for staying safe during workouts. Our bodies can only handle so much physiological stress. When our bodies are overworked, we are more susceptible to fall out of form, drop a weight, or be careless with how we move. Also, overworking ourselves leads to overuse injuries like stress fractures, muscle strains, and joint pain. When those injuries ensue, it only equates to more time spent on the sidelines. To stay resilient and healthy, it’s in our best interests to take at least one to two rest days per week.

4. Prevents Muscle Fatigue
Muscle fatigue is a symptom that decreases your muscles’ ability to perform over time. It’s often associated with constant exhaustion, which is linked to low glycogen levels. When fatigued, the force behind your muscles’ movement decreases, causing you to feel weak and sore. Until glycogen levels are properly restored, you can expect to see negative effects on your overall fitness. How do you combat this? Rest.

5. Improves Performance
Overtraining can result in many things, and performance is one of them. When you’re tired, your ordinary routine can be hard to manage, and with that, motivation drops. And understandably so. Overtraining is thought of as a recovery imbalance and is linked to burnout, altered moods, and even an increased rate of infections. Not to mention, endurance, agility, and slow reaction times go hand-in-hand with overtraining. However, rest has the opposite effect. Not only does it help increase energy stores, but it also prevents fatigue which allows your body to prepare for its next workout.

6. Optimizes Overall Sleep
We all tend to push ourselves to our limits when it comes to exercise. Did you know that by allowing yourself rest days, your sleep can dramatically improve? We’re all familiar with the notion of exercise enhancing our sleep, but studies show that overproduction of stress hormones can interfere with sleep cycles. How does this work? Physical activity increases energy-boosting hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. By constantly exercising, it’s easy to overproduce these hormones, which makes it more than challenging to get quality sleep, and it may worsen fatigue and brain fog symptoms. Taking a few days to rest allows you to get better sleep while letting your hormones return to homeostasis.
